Tech Q&A with Leo Murphy

Leo Murphy is a scoli finish technician who has been with Boston O&P since 2007. He specializes in finishing scoliosis braces. "When I make a brace and see the in-brace X-ray with a great correction, it makes me feel like I am accomplishing my goals," Murphy said. "I set out to finish the best brace for every patient."
What made you decide to get into this field?
I wanted a job in which I could make a living by helping people live a better life. I always had an interest in the orthotics and prosthetics field. I knew this was the best field in order to help people.
What is a typical work day for you like?
Every day is different. When you think you have seen everything, something new comes along. For instance, the Boston Brace 3D and many more innovative products are created every day to improve patient outcomes.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
My favorite thing about my job is the people I work with. Everyone listens to each other and when you have an idea, the managers try to make it a reality in production. Everyone is willing to help each other, whether it be a question for customer service or a question on the brace design. We all want the best brace for the patient.
What has been the most challenging technical project you’ve had while at Boston O&P?
One challenge I face is coming up with LEAN ideas. LEAN is a big part of our company and helps us produce the best products. Another challenge I have overcome is reading and understanding X-rays in order to achieve a good correction.
What’s the best reaction you’ve ever had from a client or patient to one of your fabrications?
“There was no adjustment needed on the brace. Everything was done really well. Great correction!”
What project or goal would you like to accomplish at Boston O&P?
I would like to become a certified technician in order to help patients in a better way. My ability to provide quality braces to patients will improve as my skill set grows.
